The Manchester United manager could face a Football Association charge after heavily criticising Atkinson's performance in United's Barclays Premier League defeat at Chelsea on Tuesday.
Ferguson's post-match comments to United's in-house channel MUTV caused the most controversy, with the veteran boss suggesting the Stamford Bridge fixture was not overseen by a "strong referee".
Ferguson was incensed that Chelsea's David Luiz was not sent off after a challenge on Wayne Rooney which he deemed worthy of a second yellow card.
"You want a fair referee, or a strong referee anyway - and we didn't get that," Ferguson said.
